Tempeste interplanetarie si sono abbattute questa mattina sulla nostra atmosfera: verso le 13:30, di colpo, sono spariti tutti i segnali su tutte le bande e lo s-meter della radio è rimasto posizionato come se l'antenna fosse staccata dalla radio. Questo però, prima e dopo l'orario di quiete, non mi ha impedito di fare attività sui 20 metri; i soliti collegamenti europei, una stazione asiatica ma nessun segnale proveniente da oltreoceano. Una giornata che andrà di certo ricordata.

Interplanetary storms hit our atmosphere this morning: around 1.30pm, suddenly, all the signals on all bands disappeared and the radio's s-meter remained positioned as if the antenna was detached from the radio. This, however, before and after the quiet time, did not prevent me from doing activities on 20 meters; the usual European connections, an Asian station but no signal from overseas. A day that will certainly be remembered. -

Si continua cercando qualche collegamento sui 20 metri. Quest'oggi però, i 14 mhz sono stati meno capricciosi del solito, buone aperture in tutta Europa e qualche sporadico segnale proveniente dal Sud America. Dal mio QTH la parte meridionale del continente americano è estremamente difficile da collegare, le volte che ci sono riuscito sono veramente poche e tutti collegamenti sono stati complicati da portare a termine. Ricordo che il primo QSO col Brasile, sono riuscito ad effettuarlo con la Exential di IW2EN, sui 15 metri, con la stazione PP4T, tanta soddisfazione e con i soli 100 watt dello Yaest FT 857 che possedevo in quel periodo. Stasera, stazioni brasiliane non ne ho collegate ma con immensa sorpresa, ho ricevuto la chiamata di BD4UJ (China) e abbiamo concluso il QSO. Non ho proprio tentato, durante l'attività, di chiamare un stazione così lontana perchè credevo di non riuscire a collegarla, invece, il collegamento c'è stato.

We continue looking for some connections on 20 meters. Today however, the 14 MHz was less capricious than usual, good openings throughout Europe and some sporadic signals coming from South America. From my QTH the southern part of the American continent is extremely difficult to connect, the times I have succeeded are very few and all connections have been complicated to complete. I remember that the first QSO with Brazil, I managed to make it with the IW2EN Exential, on 15 meters, with the PP4T station, a lot of satisfaction and with only 100 watts of the Yaest FT 857 that I owned at that time. Stasra, I didn't connect any Brazilian stations but with immense surprise, I received the call from BD4UJ (China) and we concluded the QSO. During the activity, I didn't really try to call a station that was so far away because I didn't think I would be able to connect it, however, the connection was there.

Attività tranquilla questo pomeriggio e questa sera, al limite della monotonia. Discreto numero di QSO, propagazione sui 20 metri abbastanza buona e collegamenti non troppo difficoltosi in ambito europeo. Non ho controllato le altre bande per constatare la propagazione su altre frequenze ma molto probabilmente non avrei incotrato situazioni diverse da quelle che ho ritrovato sui 14 mhz.

Quiet activity this afternoon and this evening, bordering on monotony. Fair number of QSOs, fairly good propagation on 20 meters and connections that are not too difficult within Europe. I didn't check the other bands to see the propagation on other frequencies but most likely I wouldn't have encountered situations different from those I found on 14 MHz. -

The next milestone was reached, 9,000 QSOs concluded and confirmed with 9,000 different European amateur radio stations. The last step remains, 10,000 and then I will have concluded this award but not to continue doing radio with the same passion. -

Proprio oggi, l'FT8dmc mi ha recapitato due Award, uno lo condividerò domani in un altro post, uno invece voglio condividerlo adesso. L'AAA (All Asia Award), viene riconosciuto ai radioamatori che hanno concluso con successo collegamenti con almeno 30 nazioni diverse del continente asiatico. Lo step successivo si ottiene con 50 nazioni e l'ultimo quando si collega ogni singolo Stato dell'Asia. Non è un Award importante quello di oggi, è solo il primo della classifica ma, comsiderato che per mia scelta non utilizzo più di 50 watt e che le mie antenne non sono installate nelle condizioni migliori, questo riconoscimento è un vero successo. Concludo questo post con un altro dettaglio relativo però alla giornata di ieri; dopo cena, approfittando di uno strano spiraglio propagativo sui 12 metri, ho collegato 3G0YA (Easter island), l'isola di Pasqua, 14.800 km dal mio QTH. Ma per gli invidiosi, i detrattori dei modi digitali e per tutti gli altri OM che si sentono puristi solo perchè fanno "fonia", fare un collegamento così non è fare radio. Per me invece, lo è molto di più dei tanti collegamenti finti che molti scrivono sui loro logbook e che invece non trovano conferma nè su QRZ, nè su Clublog, nè su LOTW.

Just today, the FT8dmc gave me two Awards, I will share one tomorrow in another post, but I want to share one now. The AAA (All Asia Award) is recognized to radio amateurs who have successfully established connections with at least 30 different nations on the Asian continent. The next step is achieved with 50 nations and the last one when every single state in Asia is connected. Today's Award is not an important one, it is only the first in the ranking but, considering that by choice I do not use more than 50 watts and that my antennas are not installed in the best conditions, this recognition is a real success. I conclude this post with another detail relating to yesterday; after dinner, taking advantage of a strange propagation glimmer on 12 meters, I connected 3G0YA (Easter island), 14,800 km from my QTH. But for the envious, the detractors of digital modes and for all the other OMs who feel purist just because they make "phonic", making a connection like this is not making radio. For me, however, it is much more so than the many fake links that many write in their logbooks and which instead are not confirmed neither on QRZ, nor on Clublog, nor on LOTW.

Giornata iniziata con attività all'aperto. Insieme al fidato amico, lo Yaesu FT818, ho trascorso un paio d'ore in riva al mare cercando di fare qualche collegamento. Peccato che continui a proseguire però il periodo propagativo negativo, nessun contatto fuori Italia e l'unico QSO portato a termine è stato sui 20 metri con il grande amico IT9GXC e con Carmelo IU3GPT. Rientrato, ho continuato con un pò di attività sui 17 metri, ma anche li pochi contatti e sempre difficli da portare a termine. In compenso, il setup portatile si sta rivelando molto semplice e veloce da installare, resta da fare qualche esperimento con altri sistemi e con l'818, durante le traversate fra la sponda calabrese e quella sicula.

The day started with outdoor activities. Together with my trusty friend, the Yaesu FT818, I spent a couple of hours at the seaside trying to make some connections. It's a shame that the negative propagation period continues, however, no contact outside Italy and the only QSO completed was on 20 meters with our great friend IT9GXC and with Carmelo IU3GPT. Once back, I continued with some activity on 17 metres, but even there I had few contacts and were always difficult to complete. On the other hand, the portable setup is proving to be very simple and quick to install, some experiments remain to be done with other systems and with the 818, during the crossings between the Calabrian and Sicilian sides.

Un pomeriggio trascorso a cercare un pò di propagazione e qualche QSO. Condizioni scarse su tutte le frequenze e difficoltà a chiudere ogni collegamento. Inizio a comprendere come mai, gli anziani radioamatori, arrivato il caldo, dedicavano meno tempo alle HF per dedicarsi maggiormente a V e U e magari alla 27. Unica nota positiva della giornata, 3D2CCC collegato in mattinata sui 15 metri; con la fortuna che mi ritrovo però, probabilmente non mi confermerà il QSO su clublog.

An afternoon spent looking for some propagation and some QSOs. Poor conditions on all frequencies and difficulty closing every connection. I'm starting to understand why the elderly radio amateurs, once the heat arrived, dedicated less time to HF to dedicate themselves more to V and U and perhaps to the 27. The only positive note of the day, 3D2CCC connected in the morning on 15 metres; with my luck though, he probably won't confirm the QSO on clublog. -

Qualche collegamento anche stasera, propagazione che ancora resta chiusa dal mio QTH e difficoltà anche oggi a portare a termine i QSO. Nessun contatto fuori Europa.

Con un pò di ritardo, pubblico il resoconto del pomeriggio della giornata di ieri. Pochi QSO e solo sui 20 metri, non sempre la propagazione è benevola ma alla fine, i risultati si portano sempre.

Anche stamattina propagazione praticamente inesistente sui 12, 15, 17 e 30 metri. Qualche collegamento sui 20 e una simpatica sorpresa sempre su questa frequenza: OJ0T (Market Reef). Qualche altro QSO concluso successivamente ma con molta difficoltà.

Il tempo per cercare di ottenere il maggior numero di contatti è stato poco, fra lavoro e impegni familiari l'attività in radio non è stata molto costante nel corso del mese di aprile. Comunque, nonostante questo, sono riuscito a portare a casa 94 collegamenti con le stazione impegnate in questo evento. Un risultato, a mio parere, decoroso.

There was little time to try to obtain the greatest number of contacts, between work and family commitments the activity on the radio was not very constant during the month of April. However, despite this, I managed to bring home 94 connections with the stations involved in this event. A decent result, in my opinion.

Devo riconoscere che non amo molto i 40 metri, sarà la mia impressione ma pare che su questa frequenza le stazioni chiamate facciano finta di non sentire per evitare di chiudere un QSO. Ho constatato spesso che, provando a chiamare due OM geograficamente vicini fra loro, il primo non rispondeva alla chiamata e il secondo si. Credevo di sbagliarmi all'inizio, magari la propagazione a volte, su certe frequenze, può essere capricciosa ma, essendosi ripetuto più volte allora ho capito che, come in tutti i luoghi del mondo, anche nel nostro ci stanno persone che mancano dei principi basilari del saper vivere civile. Pazienza, si vive lo stesso e si fa radio lo stesso, il divertimento non manca mai e anche stasera, è bastato cambiare modalità di trasmissione, passare da FT8 a FT4, per fare tantissimi collegamenti.

I must admit that I don't like 40 meters very much, it may be just my impression but it seems that on this frequency the stations called pretend not to hear to avoid closing a QSO. I have noticed very often that, when trying to call two OMs geographically close to each other, the first did not answer the call and the second did. I thought I was wrong at the beginning, maybe the propagation at times, on certain frequencies, can be capricious but, having repeated it several times then I understood that, as in all places in the world, even in ours there are people who lack the basic principles of civil life. Never mind, we live the same and we do radio the same, the fun never fails and even tonight, it was enough to change the transmission mode, going from FT8 to FT4, to make lots of connections.

Propagazione completamente chiusa oggi sui 12, 15 e 17 metri. Spostato il VFO sui 20 metri invece, ho iniziato a mettere a log qualche contatto e poi, verso sera, passato sui 40 ho concluso un discreto numero di QSO. Quasi 100 collegamenti pure oggi, ottimo.

Propagation completely closed today on 12, 15 and 17 meters. Having moved the VFO to 20 meters I started to log some contacts and then, towards the evening, having moved to 40 I concluded a fair number of QSOs. Almost 100 connections today too, excellent. -

Propagazione aperta nel primo pomeriggio con skip che hanno fatto arrivare il mio segnale nel Nord America e in Oceania e verso sera la solita Europa. Meritevole di menzione C21TS (Nauru), collegato e confermato sia su QRZ che su clublog.

Little activity today, just over a couple of hours in the second part of the day. Propagation opened in the early afternoon with skips that sent my signal to North America and Oceania and the usual Europe towards the evening. Allego a questo post la lettera del proprietario della nota casa di prodotti radioamatoriali MFJ che ne annuncia la chiusura. Sinceramente mi dispiace, mi dispiace perchè i suoi prodotti sono di buona qualità, mi dispiace perchè tanti padri di famiglia adesso dovranno trovarsi un nuovo lavoro e mi dispiace anche perchè è il segno che il mondo radioamatoriale è in declino. Mi dispiace per i commenti che ho letto in giro, commenti che poco hanno del vero "ham spirit", commenti che vengono da molti OM italiani. Sono radioamatore da relativamente poco, solo 3 anni, ma non sono nato ieri e quello che devo riconoscere al mondo radioamatoriale nostrano è la pochezza di intenti, il facile giudizio e il non esimersi mai dall'esprimere pareri negativi su qualunque evento (Bouvet solo per citarne uno recente). Fortunatamente però, nel nostro hobby è possibile variare e il digitale, mai come in questo momento storico, permette di scegliere come fare radio e con chi farla. All'inizio della mia avventura radiantistica mi chiedevo come mai i radioamatori di altre nazioni avessero poca considerazione di noi, poi, col tempo ho capito perchè e ho deciso di crearmi i miei spazi: un blog, un forum, un canale whatsapp e due canali digitali su due app che permettono di interagire come se si fosse alla radio (CB TALK e ZELLO). Magari non avranno mai successo ma almeno saprò che ci ho messo cuore, anima e che sono al servizio degli altri OM. Spero che il futuro possa portare tante belle novità per chi, a causa della chiusura della MFJ, sarà in difficoltà e dovrà trovarsi un nuovo lavoro. A loro e alle loro famiglie auguro di vero cuore che il futuro sia generoso e possa far dimenticare questo brutto momento.

I attach to this post the letter from the owner of the well-known MFJ amateur radio products company announcing its closure. Honestly, I'm sorry, I'm sorry because your products are of good quality, I'm sorry because many family men will now have to find a new job and I'm also sorry because it's a sign that the amateur radio world is in decline. I'm sorry for the comments I've read around, comments that have little real "ham spirit", comments that come from many Italian OMs. I have been a radio amateur for a relatively short time, only 3 years, but I was not born yesterday and what I must recognize in the local amateur radio world is the paucity of intentions, the easy judgment and the never refraining from expressing negative opinions on any event (Bouvet only for cite a recent one). Fortunately, however, in our hobby it is possible to vary and digital, like never before in this historical moment, allows us to choose how to make radio and who to make it with. At the beginning of my radio adventure I wondered why radio amateurs from other nations had little consideration for us, then, over time I understood why and I decided to create my own spaces: a blog, a forum, a WhatsApp channel and two channels digital on two apps that allow you to interact as if you were on the radio (CB TALK and ZELLO). Maybe they will never be successful but at least I will know that I put my heart and soul into it and that I am at the service of other OMs. I hope that the future can bring many good news for those who, due to the closure of the MFJ, will be in difficulty and will have to find a new job. I sincerely wish them and their families that the future will be generous and will make us forget this bad moment.
